Statement on the Explosion of the Ammunition Storage Facility in Kaung Tat Village, Nam Kham Township

Date: June 1, 2026

On May 31, 2026, at 12:25 PM, an ammunition storage facility exploded in Kaung Tat Village, Nam Kham Township—an area controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). The explosion resulted in the tragic deaths of 55local civilians, left over 75 others injured, and destroyed numerous civilian homes. The Ta’ang Civil Society Network deeply mourns this loss alongside the bereaved residents of Kaung Tat.

The Ta’ang Civil Society Network strongly urges the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) to promptly investigate the cause of this explosion and take full responsibility and accountability for the incident.

In addition, the Ta’ang Civil Society Network strongly urges that prompt compensation be provided to the families of the victims and those who lost their homes. We call for the immediate implementation of rehabilitation and reconstruction programs, the provision of necessary emergency assistance, and the delivery of effective healthcare and essential services to the injured. 

The network is fully committed to working together with the community to provide necessary humanitarian assistance and ensure justice is served.

Finally, we urge the TNLA leadership to review and implement practical reforms to address current shortcomings in their security systems and management. It is imperative that they respect International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and firmly prioritize civilian safety to prevent similar tragedies from happening again in the future.
