October 20
A man was spraying pesticides in Nyan Taw village, Nawngkhio, northern Shan State, when he stepped on a landmine on October 15 at 10 a.m., resulting in the severing of his left leg below the knee.
The victim’s daughter said, “When three of us went to spray in the forest, my father stepped on a mine and lost his leg. My mother was far away, so we didn’t get hit. Now, only my mother and I will be left at home to work. As my brother is disabled, it’s even harder for us.”
The victim, 56-year-old U Soe Win, is currently receiving medical treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital and requires medical assistance.
The area where the mine explosion occurred is a former encampment site of the Danu People’s Liberation Army (DPLA)and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
The victim’s daughter added that the two groups had previously cleared the mines, and they did not think any were left, which is why they proceeded to spray the forest.
