Two men in Naung Pyit village, Nyan Daw Village Tract, Nawngkhio Township, an area recently retaken by the Terror Military Council, have reportedly stepped on landmines in their yards, resulting in the loss of one leg for each victim.

The victims, identified as U Naing Htwe (29) and Maung Kyaw Zin Win (25), sustained their injuries in separate incidents in September while clearing their yards.

A woman, the wife of one of the victims, told the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO): “We hadn’t been home for a long time. When we returned after fleeing the war, he was clearing his yard. That’s when he stepped on the mine.”

U Nyi (a pseudonym of U Naing Htwe), gave a separate statement to TWO: “I was clearing my yard after leaving due to the conflict. That’s when I stepped on the mine. I am currently receiving treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital. Kyaw Zin Win (my nephew) was discharged from the hospital. He was the first to step on one.”

U Nyi (pseudonym for U Naing Htwe) stepped on a landmine while clearing his yard on September 28 at 12:00 noon.

Similarly, Maung Ni (pseudonym for Maung Kyaw Zin Win) stepped on another mine inside the compound at 6:00 PM on September 11.

It is not known which armed group planted the mine in either instance.

U Nyi (pseudonym) is currently receiving treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital due to a severely broken left leg (resulting in amputation). Maung Ni (pseudonym) was also injured in the left leg but has since been discharged from the hospital.
