Woman Loses Leg After Stepping on Landmine While Discarding Trash in Nawngkhio
A local woman from Taung Shay Village, Nawngkhio Township, Northern Shan State, was severely injured after stepping on a landmine in her own backyard at approximately 8:30 am on January 16.
The victim recounted the horrific moment: “There is a toilet on the north side of our house. I was going to discard my child’s diapers behind the toilet when I triggered a mine. It was placed right within our property. The blast severed my right leg instantly.”
The victim was 42-year-old Ma Myint Khaing who lives in Taung Shay Village. She is currently undergoing emergency treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital for her life-altering injuries.
In the wake of this tragedy, she has urgently appealed to the relevant organizations and armed groups to clear both active and abandoned landmines from residential areas to prevent further casualties among innocent civilians.
