Son killed, mother seriously injured by landmine blast while clearing weeds in Nawngkhio 

A landmine explosion in Nawngkhio Township, Shan State, has claimed the life of a son and left his mother with severe cuts and laceration injuries on her right arm and leg. 

On March 29, 65-year-old U Nay Aung (name changed) and his 78-year-old mother, Daw Mya Mya Win (name changed), were clearing weeds in their yard in Yar Pyin Village, Nyaung Taw Village Tract, when they triggered a hidden tripwire mine.

U Nay Aung passed away while being transported to the hospital due to fatal shrapnel wounds. His mother, Daw Mya Mya Win, sustained severe injuries to both her right arm and leg.

“They had returned home after fleeing the conflict some time ago. While cleaning around their house that day, they struck a mine. The grandmother is still receiving treatment at Nawngkhio Hospital and is currently unable to walk. She has not yet been told about her son’s death because the family is worried about the impact it might have on her health,” a local resident told TWO.

Yar Pyin Village was previously a site of intense clashes between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Terror Military Council troops. Locals stated they could not confirm which group was responsible for planting the mine.
