Man Steps on Landmine in Nawngkhio Township
A resident of Naung Leik Village in Nawngkhio Township, Northern Shan State, was severely injured, losing his left leg,after stepping on a landmine while gathering firewood in a forest.
At approximately 3:00 PM on March 9, 55-year-old U Maung Thar Ni stepped on the landmine about three miles away from Naung Leik village.
His son told the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO), “Three people were out cutting firewood together, and it was my father who stepped on the mine. He was the only one injured. We transported him from the village to the hospital using a car owned by a monk. I am not sure which armed group is active in that forest area.”

As a result of the blast, U Maung Thar Ni lost his left leg and left hand. He is currently receiving medical treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital, where his family is reportedly facing financial difficulties in covering his medical expenses.
According to data collected by the Ta’ang Women’s Organization, between January 2026 and the present, 19 people, including six children, have been injured by landmines, and one person has died.
