Man Loses Leg in Landmine Explosion in Yapin Village, Nawngkhio

A man from Yapin Village in the Nawngkhio Township village tract of northern Shan State stepped on a landmine in a sugarcane field, resulting in the amputation of his left leg, according to his wife.

The incident occurred around 2:00 PM on June 30, 2026, when U Khin Maung Oo was clearing weeds in a sugarcane field located a half-hour motorcycle ride from the village.

“We always traveled to that sugarcane field, though we never went toward the weed-covered section. Three of us went into the field together, but only my husband stepped on the mine, and he was the only one injured,”  His wife recounted the incident to the Ta’ang Women’s Organization.  

“From the site of the explosion, we traveled by motorcycle to the Nawngkhio Hospital. After receiving brief treatment there, we took a social rescue vehicle to the Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital, where his left leg had to be amputated,” she continued. 

She added that the location where the landmine was triggered had previously been a site of armed conflict between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the terrorist military council.

U Khin Maung Oo has since had his left leg amputated below the knee. Although he has been discharged from the hospital, he is currently unable to perform any work.
