Man Steps on Landmine While Planting Sugarcane in Nawnghkio

June 4, 2026 — A man in Shan State’s Nawnghkio Township, an area recently captured from the Myanmar military junta, lost a leg after stepping on a landmine while working in his field, according to a local source.

The incident occurred around 9:30 AM on June 1, when U Myo Htet Lwin was planting sugarcane on his farmland, located about a mile from Magyigon Village.

“He was alone in the field when the mine exploded. A farmer nearby heard the blast and rushed to help him. A local charity group then transported him from Nawnghkio through the village to Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital,” a local resident said.

U Myo Htet Lwin sustained severe injuries to his left leg and right knee, leading to an amputation above his right knee. The blast also blinded him in his left eye.

Residents of the village rely primarily on upland farming to earn a living, but locals say that landmine risks have now rendered them unable to work their traditional farmland.

U Myo Htet Lwin is currently receiving treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital and urgently requires financial assistance for his medical care.
