outh Undergoes Hand Amputation After Landmine Explodes During Firewood Chopping in NawnghkioÂ
A 19-year-old man suffered severe injuries and required a partial hand amputation after triggering a landmine while chopping firewood at his home in Military Council-controlled Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, local sources said.
The incident occurred on May 12 in Par Hat Ward, Nawnghkio Township, when the victim, identified as Maung Htet Ko Aung, was splitting firewood at his residence.
“It happened at night. I went to chop some firewood because I was hungry,” the victim told the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO). “I didn’t know there was a landmine underneath the log. It detonated the moment I struck it with the axe.”
The explosion left Maung Htet Ko Aung with catastrophic injuries, forcing doctors to amputate his left arm above the wrist. He also suffered a fractured index finger and a lacerated thumb on his right hand, alongside shrapnel abrasions on his right leg.
