Farmer Injured in Nawnghkio Landmine Blast Needs Financial Aid for Surgery
A 34-year-old local farmer in northern Shan State’s Nawnghkio Township was severely injured when he struck a landmine while clearing farmland that had been abandoned for two years, according to local sources and advocacy groups.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. on May 11 near Ummathee Village, Nawnghkio Township, when the victim, identified as U Sai Lao Liang, struck a landmine with a clearing tool while working in his field alongside two others.”Three of them went to clear the land, but only he was hit,” the victim’s brother told the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO). “The plot had been left untouched for about two years. Surgical steel rods had to be implanted in his right leg.”

The blast caused severe injuries to U Sai Lao Liang’s left leg and fractured his right leg, requiring orthopedic surgery.Locals noted that while active clashes had previously occurred in the area, the specific type of landmine and the group responsible for laying it remain unidentified.U Sai Lao Liang was rushed to Pyin Oo Lwin General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Relatives stated that while he has received initial surgical care, the family is facing severe financial difficulty and urgently needs financial assistance to cover ongoing medical expenses.
