Man Needs Urgent Medical Aid After Losing Leg in Nawnghkio Landmine Explosion
A 54-year-old man in northern Shan State’s Nawnghkio Township required a leg amputation after stepping on a landmine while searching for his cattle, according to local sources and human rights advocates.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. on May 25 near Kalar Kwe Village, Nawnghkio Township, when the victim, identified as U Lun Kywe, went to locate his buffaloes that had been released to graze on farmlands.
“Others had walked through that same area before without incident, but he triggered the mine,” the victim’s nephew told the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO). “The force of the blast severed his right leg at the ankle on impact.”

Locals noted that while the area had previously seen active fighting, it was not an active route or outpost routinely used by armed groups at the time of the incident.
U Lun Kywe was rushed to Pyin Oo Lwin General Hospital, where surgeons amputated his right leg. Relatives stated that the family is facing severe financial hardship and urgently requires financial assistance to cover his ongoing medical care.
